Smoke extraction systems – roof windows for removing smoke and heat
Smoke extraction systems (RWA) are solutions that, in the event of a fire, automatically remove smoke, toxic gases and excess heat from the loft or uppermost floors. Their main component is a smoke ventilation window or powered roof access hatch that opens when signalled by the control panel or smoke detectors. This keeps escape routes free of smoke for longer and makes rescue operations safer and more effective.
In practice, a smoke extraction system consists of:
a smoke ventilation window/hatch in the roof,
an actuator and controls (control panel, buttons and detectors),
suitable installation and seals to ensure the window operates reliably even after years of use.
These solutions are used in homes with habitable lofts, blocks of flats, commercial buildings and halls, wherever fire regulations require them or the design calls for smoke to be vented through the roof.
