What are loft ladders, and what are they used for?

As the name suggests, loft ladders lead to a loft, attic, storage space or mezzanine. They aren't intended for everyday use, so comfort isn't the main priority. Above all, they need to be functional and take up as little space as possible.

Types of loft ladder

They can be made from wood, steel or a combination of both. Oak, maple, birch, cherry, pine, ash and beech are the most common woods. Harder exotic woods with more striking colours, such as teak and doussie, are also worth considering. Solid wood or laminated timber produces the most durable treads. Wood-based materials can also be used in some cases.

Loft ladders and stairs can be fixed, folding or sliding down from above. They come in different designs and shapes. The most common types include:
  • sectional folding ladders - convenient and compact: when folded, they disappear completely into the ceiling. The ladder is made from wood or metal, with a hatch that is often thermally insulated. They usually have several sections that slide into one another or overlap.
  • scissor ladders - fold up like a concertina and are usually made from steel or aluminium. They're ideal where there isn't enough room to open a folding ladder. To open them, you pull them out;
  • fixed space-saving stairs - don't fold away. They're useful where there isn't room for another type of staircase but permanent access is needed, as folding and unfolding a ladder each time would be too inconvenient;

At Ambit you'll find Fakro loft ladders. Made from pine, spruce or metal, these folding ladders give you easy, safe access to your loft. When folded, they disappear into the ceiling, freeing up space in the room. They're functional, comfortable to use and durable. They're also easy to install: two people can fit them without difficulty.

Fakro's range mainly consists of sectional ladders with three or four parts. Their carefully designed construction and suitable materials make loft spaces easy, convenient and safe to use. The ladder length can be adjusted to the room height.
