Choosing the right roof covering is one of the most important decisions when designing a single-family house. There is no doubt that roof tiles are an unrivalled solution for pitched roofs. Bear in mind that, given the high cost of materials and installation, the roof you choose will serve you for decades.
The main differences between clay and concrete roof tiles
Two types of roof tile are available, differing mainly in the material they are made from. These are clay roof tiles and cement tiles, also known as concrete tiles. With similar performance characteristics they compete fiercely for every customer. Here are the main differences between the two tile types:
- durability – in both cases, the manufacturer’s warranty is measured in decades. Clay tiles are estimated to last up to 100 years, compared with around 80 years for concrete,
- resistance – the two materials differ only slightly in strength. Both products are highly resistant to weather and water absorption. However, clay tiles perform slightly better in both respects,
- colours – concrete tiles are available in uniform colours, while clay tiles have distinctive colouring produced by firing. Cement can also fade over the years, but can be painted and treated with impregnation products,
- shape and size – as a rule, concrete roof tiles are larger and have exactly the same dimensions within a batch. For clay tiles, drying and firing can cause slight variations in size,
- weight – products made from cement are lighter than those made from clay, which should be considered when designing the roof structure,
- maintenance – clay tiles are the clear winner in terms of maintenance, requiring virtually no additional work. Cement tiles, however, need maintenance and cleaning every dozen or so years,
- roof pitch – clay tiles can be laid on slopes from 16° to 45°, while concrete tiles require a pitch from 22° to 60°,
- price – clay tiles cost around 33 zł/m2, while concrete tiles cost around 20 zł/m2.
Which roof tile is the best choice?
As is often the case, there is no clear answer as to which material is best. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. To sum up, if you have more money available, it is better to invest in clay tiles. If you would like to save a little while still buying a good-quality product, you can choose concrete tiles.
