Roof renovation usually means replacing the entire roof. Roof repairs may involve replacing not only the covering but also the roof structure. It all depends on why the roof needs repairing. Sometimes the problem lies in the roof structure rather than the covering, and the structure needs strengthening. Roof repairs can mean replacing the entire covering or restoring it by painting.
There are various reasons for renovation. A roof may have been damaged by a gale or fire. Insects or fungi may have infested the loft, destroying the roof structure from within. If too much heat escapes through the roof, it is worth considering whether repairs will help retain heat in the home and reduce heating costs. Roofs are also often replaced for aesthetic reasons, although not every covering needs replacing in such cases.
For older buildings whose structures may be unable to support the roof's weight, we offer lightweight roof coverings such as steel roof tiles. If a new roof structure is being built, heavier materials such as clay or concrete tiles can also be used. A structural engineer should, of course, assess whether the building's structure can support the roof's weight. As we have worked in the construction industry for well over a decade, we have the experience needed to renovate roofs. We have already renovated many roofs, including those of detached homes and numerous historic churches. The number of renovations we have completed ensures that your roof will be repaired to meet its actual needs.
How do we assess the scope of a roof renovation?
An inspection before undertaking roof renovation includes reviewing the thermal insulation requirements for the particular type of structure. These requirements vary according to the roof pitch. The next step is to assess heat flow through the building elements and any signs of moisture within them. It is also worth looking for frost damage and considering the thickness of snow cover and its implications for the safety and strength of the roof being renovated. Our knowledge and experience give us an excellent understanding of these issues. We know how to protect structural elements effectively against corrosion, insects and excessive heat loss.
What causes a timber roof's condition to deteriorate?
Treated timber is a common building material, but its strength decreases over time. Several factors affect the deterioration of timber roofs on residential buildings, including the building's age and how often it is repaired. Few people realise that regular periodic repairs can significantly improve the strength of a timber structure. Inspections, renovation and even comprehensive upgrading of the roof covering are essential, particularly with heavier roofing materials such as concrete roof tiles. Sometimes, even after major repairs, the roof's technical condition leaves much to be desired because the scope of work was incorrectly determined. Roof renovation with our company guarantees safe use of the building for years to come.
