Soffits

Affordable, attractive cladding enhances and modernises the façade while protecting it against damage from water and wind. The material is also suitable for soffits and eaves finishes. We recommend soffits and cladding from Gamrat, Galeco and Cedral.

What is a roof soffit and what does it do?

A soffit finishes the underside of the roof by covering the projecting rafter ends. It also protects the eaves, the part that extends beyond the walls and is particularly exposed to the weather, from deterioration. It prevents birds from nesting there too. Fitting a soffit beneath the eaves also allows additional lighting to be installed around the house.

Soffits can be installed in two ways: by fixing the components directly to the rafters or perpendicular to the house wall. They must be fitted so that they do not obstruct the airflow needed to ventilate the roof. Otherwise, the insulation could quickly become damp, increasing heat loss. Damp insulation would soon put the structure at risk too. It is therefore best to leave soffit selection and installation to professionals. You will find experienced specialists at Ambit Pokrycia Dachowe.

Types

Roof soffits can be made from timber, wood-based materials, metal or PCV.
  • Timber soffits are the oldest method of protecting the eaves. Spruce, pine or larch boards are used. They can be stained in your chosen colour and varnished before installation. The drawback of timber panels is that they require special maintenance treatments.
  • Wood-based panels are made from fresh wood shavings mixed with resins. Their surface is also protected with coloured acrylic paint. Their uniform structure makes them resistant to high temperatures and moisture. Maintenance involves repainting every 10-12 years.
  • Types of metal panels include aluminium and steel. Steel panels can be made by cutting galvanised steel sheets to size. The flat sheets used are also used for flashing. Trapezoidal sheets can also be used for soffits. It is best to have an experienced roofer cut the sheets and fit the panels.
  • PCV panels are the most modern and practical type of soffit. They can be smooth or wood-textured, solid or perforated. The openings in perforated panels allow ventilation beneath the roof covering. Soffits come in various colours. The panels are coloured throughout, so scratches are not visible. Maintenance consists of washing with water and detergent. They are usually sold with complementary components such as edge trims, angle trims and joining strips.
  • Cladding panels are currently the most popular material for soffits. They are used particularly on houses finished with vinyl cladding (siding), where the soffit forms part of the complete façade system.
