Choosing the colour of the roof tiles for your home is an important decision that affects the appearance of the whole building. Well-chosen roof tile and façade colours say something about the house and its owners. It is therefore worth making sure these colours work well together rather than clashing. Remember, too, that it is much easier to change the façade colour than the roof colour, so choose carefully. Here is our advice on choosing the right roof tile colour.

How should you choose a roof tile colour?

When choosing a roof tile colour, aim to match it to the façade so that they form a coherent whole. Colours that do not work together will tire the eye and make the building look rather garish. Of course, matching the tiles to the colours of the surroundings is not compulsory, but good taste calls for you to consider the house as a whole.  Some of the best combinations of façade and roof tile colours are:

  • white façades – offer the greatest freedom when choosing a roof colour. The most common combination is white walls with a red roof, but any other roof tile colour will also work well with a white façade,
  • stone, brick or clinker brick buildings – shades of beige, yellow and brown work best,
  • yellow façades – brown or red tiles are the best choice,
  • blue or green walls – these unusual colours make choosing the right tile a considerable challenge, as it is easy to cross the boundary of good taste. Dark brown or grey tiles are usually a good choice.

The roof tile colour should also suit the building’s overall style:

  • traditional – red or copper-coloured tiles suit this style,
  • modern – tiles in cooler colours, such as black, white or shades of grey,
  • minimalist – a roof in very dark colours, such as black,
  • rustic – various shades of brown, copper and green,
  • Scandinavian – light shades of grey,
  • Mediterranean – various warm colours, such as yellow, copper, red and brown.

Roof tile colours: when less is more

Remember that a house should have no more than three main exterior colours. Adding more colours is a very risky move. It is therefore recommended that the windows, doors and chimney match the roof colour. If you need help choosing colours, please contact our specialists.
